Theory and Types of Conflicts

Course Description

The course introduce students to the special segment of Peace Studies – conflict resolution. Course examines the origins, assumptions, boundaries and practical capacity of this field of research. Consequently, the first part of the course will present the main theoretical approaches to conflict resolution, i. e. their origins and orientations. The second part will examine conflict resolution practice of different levels and duration, taking into consideration cultural differences, structures and actors interdependence, as well as needs of change / improvement of the current global system. Special attention will be devoted to the role of social movements in solving the contemporary conflicts. The course aims to emphasize the importance of the convergence of theory and practice, and to provide students with the practical skills for conflict resolution.

Grading System
Activity during the class is awarded with a maximum of 40 points. Paper exam is awarded with a maximum of 60 points. Final grade is calculated as follows:

  • 51 – 60 points     –  grade 6
  • 61 – 70 points     –  grade 7
  • 71 – 80 points     –  grade 8
  • 81 – 90 points     –  grade 9
  • 91 – 100 points   –  grade 10
